Dating to approximately the late 1800s/early 1900s, this hand-pieced Log Cabin π‘ quilt has an incredible assortment of period prints in warm browns, faded blues, soft pinks, reds, mustard and deep indigo. Each block begins with that wonderful red center (traditionally associated with the βhearthβ or heart of the home.)
What makes this quilt especially interesting is whatβs hiding inside. This quilt was constructed over an older quilt, a wonderful example of the make-do tradition of using what was already available. In a few areas where the stitching or trim has come loose and you can actually catch a glimpse of the earlier quilt tucked inside. π€
It is a substantial, heavy quilt, consistent with that layered construction, and entirely hand pieced. It shows honest signs of its long life, including age spotting to the front and reverse and several areas where stitching/trim has loosened, as photographed. I personally love that these little openings reveal part of the quiltβs hidden history rather than detract from it.
Measuring 74Γ76β, it makes a striking display piece and is a particularly interesting example for anyone who loves early textiles, make-do construction and quilts that wear their history proudly.
