This early ovoid redware bank features a beautifully thrown rounded body, raised foot, applied coin slot and a turned finial at the top. The unglazed surface has developed a warm, dry patina. I would conservatively date this one to the 19th century, likely c1850–1880. The visible throwing lines, irregularities in the clay and wonderfully worn surface all add to its early handmade appeal.
📏 3 1/2” in diameter x 4” tall
There is one old chip to the finial, clearly showing considerable age and blending beautifully with the overall surface. Otherwise, wear and imperfections are consistent with age and use. A fantastic little piece for a redware collection and that ovoid shape is just so good. 🤎
