Wonderful Southern Appalachian ribbed gathering basket retaining beautifully worn blue-green paint. Hand woven in what appears to be split white oak, with a broad arched handle, sturdy rim and distinctive rib construction.
The old painted surface is especially appealing, with natural wear revealing the wood beneath and giving the basket a wonderfully primitive, untouched appearance.
Age: c1890–1910
Origin: Southern Appalachian, likely Virginia/Tennessee/North Carolina
Material: Likely split white oak
Measurements: 14” × 13½” × 12½” H
Good antique condition with expected wear, paint loss and dryness from age and use. Scattered breaks and losses to individual splints are present, as photographed. The basket remains structurally intact with a secure handle.
A beautiful piece of early Appalachian basketry with desirable old blue-green paint, generous size and wonderful country character.
